SHERMAN, Texas – The Ladies lost a five-set thriller in the final match of the weekend after falling by four sets earlier in the day as Centenary College (2-3) lost to Macalester (4-1) 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14 before dropping the match to Sul Ross State (2-2) 22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 16-14 at the Austin College Classic Saturday, September 5.

Freshman Hailey Lawson earned All-Tournament recognition after finishing the weekend with 38 kills (2.92 per set) and 40 digs (3.08 per set), including a pair of double-doubles on Saturday. In match one, she had 10 kills and 13 digs before finishing the day with 20 kills and 15 digs in the Ladies tournament finale.

Against Sul Ross State trailing 7-4 in the final set, Lawson put herself on serve with a kill. Her lone ace of the match and a double block by sophomore Desiree Frey and senior Lindsey Long tied the match. Frey’s kill on a long rally gave the Ladies their first lead in the fifth.

Long later added an ace to open up a 10-8 advantage. A few points later, freshman Ashley Brown killed an overpass and a Frey ace put Centenary back up 13-12. The Lobos fought back to score the next two points and held off the Ladies 16-14 to claim the match.

Down 22-21 in set one, Frey tied the set with a kill. An ace by sophomore Allison Lazewski put Centenary in the lead and did not allow Sul Ross State back to the service line a Lobo error and a kill by Frey put the Ladies up a set.

Another strong end of set gave the Ladies a 2-0 lead. Tied at 18, Frey – who contributed her own double-double with a match-high 21 kills and 15 digs – contributed a kill. Tied again at 21, freshman Shyann Pisano  added a pair of kills and a Lawson slam off an overpass put the Ladies on set point. The two team sided out as Centenary took the set by three points.

The third set saw Centenary rally from seven down, but it was the Lobos who turned the tables with a strong end of set. With the Ladies down 21-14, a service error put Long on serve. Two aces around a Lobo attack error brought Centenary within three. Kills by Frey and Brown, an ace and a Sul Ross State error  capped the 8-0 spurt. After both teams traded points, Sul Ross State’s Brittany Serrano – who contributed her own double-double with 19 kills and 21 digs – tied the match. Two assisted blocks by Carly Montero and Breeann Sturges gave the Lobos a set.

Tied at 20 in the fourth, Sul Ross State scored 5-of-7 points to force the deciding fifth.

The maroon and white held a 67-54 advantage in total kills for the match, but Sul Ross State took advantage of 13 Centenary service errors and a 12-5 advantage in total blocks.

In match one, Macelester held a slim 49-45 edge in kills and an 8-4 edge in blocks for the win. Lawson hit .320 (10 kills and two errors on 25 swings) while Brooke Hunter for Macalester added 14 kills and two errors on 23 swings for a .522 hitting percentage.
