LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The award season got off to a fast start for Centenary College athletics as junior Marissa Hughes (Richardson, Texas / Plano East High School) claimed the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for the 2015 season.

“This is a well-deserved award and hopefully a sign of great things to come,” said head coach David Orr. “Opponents will likely try to game plan for her, and it will open up our other outstanding attacking options.”

Hughes wasted no time in exciting the home crowd in the Ladies season-opening 4-2 win against East Texas Baptist on Tuesday night, September 1. After assisting on the first goal just minutes into the game, Hughes proceeded to score two more times for the first hat trick of the season in the SCAC and the Ladies first hat trick in three years.

With the score knotted at two shortly before the end of the first half, Hughes cleaned up a free ball at the top of the box and shot past the goalkeeper to score what proved to be the winning goal. However, she added the insurance score in the 61st minute when freshman Madison Alexander threaded a pass to Hughes to complete the feat.

The Centenary College women’s soccer team returns to action at Mayo Field Tuesday night (September 8) against LeTourneau. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
