SHREVEPORT, La. – It’s been 23 years, but the record has finally been vanquished.

The Ladies broke the school record for aces in a match (30) as Centenary (5-20) beat Rust (0-11) in straight sets 25-7, 25-5, 25-10, Wednesday night, October 21, at the Gold Dome.

The 30 aces was also the sixth most in a match in NCAA Division III this season. The Ladies stayed consistent, with 10 aces in each set.

It all started in the first set with sophomore Haley Cubberly. After a Rust service error tied the set at two, Cubberly stepped to the line and Centenary rattled off nine straight points. Two kills from sophomore Desiree Frey, kills from senior Lindsey Long and freshman Makenzie Shaw, two aces and three Rust errors put the Ladies up 11-2.

Sophomore Allison Lazewski, who hit a team-leading six aces, finished the set with four aces. The Maroon and White hit .316 (nine kills and three errors on 19 swings) in the set.

Set two started off right where the first set ended, with Lazewski adding a pair of aces. After she hit a service error, a service error right back proved to be the catalyst of a Centenary 20-1 run, interrupted only by a service error. Freshman Shannon Orlopp started the run with an ace, followed by a freshman Hailey Lawson kill. Orlopp then hit four aces in five points, interrupted only by another Lawson kill.

Lawson finished the match with a team-best five kills on five swings, all coming in the second set. Centenary sided out every point and hit .500 (nine kills and two errors on 14 swings) in the frame.

After a service error by Centenary and a kill from Shaw, the Ladies scored five-straight points off Long’s serve. Long added a trio of aces during the rally, finishing the match with four. Both teams sided out the rest of the set.

Set three saw Centenary up 7-6 before senior Christina NeSmith stepped to the service line. NeSmith recorded a trio of aces and senior Lindsey Bruce had a pair of kills to put the Ladies up 12-6 and force a Rust timeout. A bad set by the visitors scored another point. Rust cut it back 15-9, but a Bearcat error put Bruce on serve. She tallied a pair of aces with a Brantley kill.

Senior Kobi Stephens, who now leads the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in aces per set, recorded four aces in five points as Centenary ended the match.

Josy Chapman’s two kills and four digs led the Bearcats while Daezonia Price added six digs. Rust hit negative-.238 for the match.

Centenary returns to action Friday, October 23, against Trinity at 11:30 a.m.
