SHERMAN, Texas – With clinching a spot in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference out of the way Friday, April 15, the Ladies softball team went looking for the double-header sweep to finish the regular season .500 and record its first conference series win of the season. The Maroon and White did just that as Centenary (20-20, 9-15 SCAC) won game one 5-2, before knocking off Austin College (14-26, 4-20) 11-3 in five innings in game two Saturday afternoon, April 16.

The Ladies softball team took the lead in game one when freshman Wendy Gillet smashed a solo home run to left center, her team-leading fourth of the season. Austin College answered in the bottom of the inning, but the Ladies scored three in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Senior Emily Sexton reached to begin the inning on an error and scored when junior Lizzie Moran reached on an error. With one out, Gillet added the RBI hit. After a sacrifice moved Gillet to third, junior Mallory Ford walked. Ford then got in a rundown on an attempted steal and was tagged out, but Gillet touched home before the out to push the advantage to three.

Another error and an RBI single by Gillet pushed the Ladies lead to 5-1 after five. Gillet had a hit in all four at-bats with a trio of RBI’s and two runs scored. Freshman Lauren Beadle (3-2) started in the circle for the win, allowing just three hits and one run with a punchout. Sophomore Haley Miller recorded her second save of the season, allowing just three hits and an unearned run in three innings of work.

Austin College added an unearned run in the seventh when Raquel Vara doubled to begin the inning, but the ‘Roos popped and grounded out. A two-out error allowed Austin College and an infield hit scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate, but Miller induced the groundout for the save and clinch the fifth seed for the Ladies in the upcoming SCAC Tournament.

Victoria Herrera (5-14) took the loss for the ‘Roos, allowing nine hits and five runs (one earned) in a complete game.

Game two saw the Ladies jump out to a 7-0 lead. A one-out Moran single, a walk, a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Gillet allowed the first run to score. In the second, the Ladies turned eight walks and seven wild pitches with only one hit into six runs. Ford and sophomore Anna Dunn both walked, and a wild pitch and double steal plated the first run. Freshman Kylie Bradley walked and Dunn moved to third on a wild pitch. Another errant pitch scored Dunn and put Centenary up 3-0.

Miller, Sexton, and Moran walked and Miller scored on another wild pitch. Gillet drove in a pair with a double, and an illegal pitch put Centenary up 7-0 after two. Gillet finished the second game only 1-for-4, but drove in 4-of-6 Ladies RBI’s.

Austin College scored one in the third and a two-run home run by Felicia Rivera in the fourth, but Centenary ended the game with four in the fifth. The culprit for the ‘Roos in the fifth was two walks and a hit by pitch, two wild pitches and two errors. Miller and Sexton walked and advanced in to scoring position with a wild pitch. Freshman Cassie Gonzalez loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch, and two runs scored on sophomore Michelle Tasin’s double. Gillet reached on an RBI error. She then got in a rundown to allow Tasin to score from third.

Freshman Mackenzie Stewart allowed just a walk around three outs to close out the fifth and run-rule the ‘Roos. Freshman Nichole Aldridge(9-13) picked up the win, allowing four hits and three runs in four innings of work.

Centenary returns to action Friday, April 22, as the fifth seed in the upcoming SCAC Tournament. The Ladies take on #4 seed Southwestern at noon. If they win, the Maroon and White returns to action Friday night at 4 p.m. against top-seeded Texas Lutheran.
