Volleyball Grabs AVCA Team Academic Award

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies volleyball team accomplished something no other Pelican State collegiate team did in 2015-16.

Released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) earlier this week, the Centenary volleyball team received the Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 season. The Ladies finished the year with a 3.38 cumulative GPA

Besides being the only college team from the state of Louisiana recognized, the Ladies and Colorado College were the only schools to win the award from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

“Academics truly are a priority for our team. I am especially proud of the team’s academic success this year because our five seniors cumulative GPA was 3.85,” explained head coach Caley Carter. “That put a lot of pressure on our freshmen, because we only had two sophomores and no junior class. Volleyball is a fall sport, so we really force our student-athletes to ‘hit the ground running.’ Not many programs, with a freshmen class of seven, pull off a 3.30 cumulative GPA for the year. Our freshmen did just that!

“This is the kind of discipline I like to see in our volleyball athletes because it shows that they are willing to do whatever it takes to make our team successful and I like to think that it carries over onto the court.  I am especially proud of Amanda, Kobi, Christina, Lindsey Long and Rachel who had 4.0’s in at least one semester this school year.”

To receive the Academic Award, a team must maintain a minimum of a 3.30 cumulative GPA throughout the season. The honor, first given out in 1992-93, had a record-breaking 757 recipients among all men and women’s volleyball and beach volleyball teams in the NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA, two-year college, and high school ranks.

Centenary begins the 2016 volleyball season September 2-3 at the Austin College Classic in Sherman, Texas.
