JACKSON, Miss. – After a few early chances off the foot from Kati-Jayde Cunningham that missed the target, the sophomore made sure her next scoring chance found the back of the net.

Cunningham took a pass from freshman Olivia Jackson, dribbled twice, spun around and went right post to find the back of the net in the 30th minute. Centenary (1-0) added two more goals as it defeated Belhaven (0-1) 3-0 in the season opener for both teams Thursday afternoon, Sept. 1, in Jackson, Mississippi.

Senior goalkeeper Erica Coker grabbed six saves in her fifth collegiate shutout. She now has 332 career saves, which moves her into a third-place tie with Ali Hilsher (2004-07) in the Centenary annals. Cunningham led the Ladies offensively with four shots, scoring on her only shot on target.

Despite the Maroon and White outshooting the Blazers 12-11, Belhaven led 6-4 in shots on goal. However, the Ladies scored on 75 percent of their attempts on target while the home team came up empty.

Up 1-0 late in the first half, the Ladies kept the pressure on the Blazers. Junior Connor Harwood found the ball left of the box approximately 10-yards out. She put the ball in the box and found junior Emily Duet left post. Duet’s attempt ricocheted off the post, but she corralled her own rebound and found the back of the net in the 42nd minute. Centenary led 2-0 at the half.

The second half played even in the opening minutes, but the Maroon and White added some insurance off the foot of sophomore Maddy Brown.  She scored from the top of the box in the 71st minute.

With Centenary up a pair, Belhaven had an opportunity with the ball right outside the six-yard box to cut the deficit to one. However, the Ladies defender forced Savannah Raines tight left post and Coker grabbed the save to preserve the shutout.

Raines led the Blazers offense, putting both shot attempts on goal.

Ladies soccer returns to action when it opens up the home slate at Mayo Field against Louisiana College at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.
