SHERMAN, Texas – The Ladies took the first set in both matches Saturday, Sept. 4, but Centenary (1-3) lost the final three frames in losses to McMurry (22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22) and LeTourneau (19-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-21) to close out the Austin College Tournament.

Sophomore Hailey Lawson led the Ladies in digs in both matches on Saturday, tallying her third collegiate match with more than 20 digs against McMurry (23 digs and 10 kills for the double-double and no reception errors). As an outside hitter, Lawson leads the team and is 12th in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with 3.80 digs per set.

Lawson finished off the weekend with 17 digs against the Yellow Jackets, finishing the day with five digs per set.

Sophomore Ashley Brown continued a solid weekend, finishing the tournament with three-straight double-digit kill matches. She leads the team and sits fifth in the SCAC among players with more than 60 attack attempts with a .325 hitting percentage.

Against the War Hawks in the first match of the day, Centenary scored seven straight in the first set to take a 23-15 advantage. Junior Desiree Frey found the floor to put Brown on serve. A kill from junior Allison Lazewski off the dig, a kill for Makenzie Shaw and a Brown ace gave Centenary 20 points and forced a McMurry timeout. Another Frey kill and Brown ace around McMurry’s error put the Ladies up eight.

McMurry cut it to 24-22, but a Frey kill ended the frame.

McMurry took a second set 20-15 lead, but Centenary scored four-straight on freshman Marissa Sandoval’s serve. The War Hawks answered with 5-of-6 points to tie the match at one. The War Hawks used big runs in the third and fourth frames for a seven and a three-point win to close the match.

Brown led the team against McMurry with 11 kills. Jasmine Jones led the Warhawks with 13 kills.

LeTourneau used big wins in the second and third and held on in the fourth to rally against the Ladies. The YellowJackets outhit the Maroon and White in the first, but Centenary countered with a 3-0 advantage in aces and no service errors. Frey went 5-for-11 with one error on attack attempts (.364) while Brown went 4-for-5 with no errors to hit .800.

For the match, Frey led the team with 12 kills while Brown added 10 kills on 17 swings with no one error (.529).

LeTourneau used a 48-37 advantage in kills and hit .240 compared to Centenary’s .071.

Centenary opens up home play Tuesday when it welcomes Jarvis Christian. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
