TYLER, Texas –After three top-5 and five top-10 finishes in a little more than a season, sophomore Jessica Varner broke through.

Sitting tied for fourth after day one at +5 (77), Varner turned in a +2 (74) on the final day, the best round of the tournament, and won the championship by two strokes ahead of Morgan Loth of Texas Tyler. As a team, the Centenary Ladies (685, +109) finished seventh of 11 teams in the Al Jones Memorial Tournament at the par-72 Cascades Golf Club in Tyler, Texas, Sept. 26-27.

"The Ladies improved from day one, so I'm pleased with that," said head coach Emlyn Aubrey. "We are gaining the experience needed to be more consistent. It's exciting to see the improvements and more importantly, see the team realize that their golf games are becoming more competitive. I can't say enough about Jessie Varner. I knew it was just a matter of time until she won. Now that she has closed the deal on her first, more will follow."

Centenary bested local rival and eighth-place finisher LeTourneau by 34 strokes. Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference-rival Texas Lutheran placed ninth, 46 strokes behind the Ladies.

Varner bested the 59-player field by tallying the most birdies (six), best scoring average on par-5s (4.75), and the second-best scoring average on par 4s (4.33) for the tournament.  She nearly had the tournament’s only eagle when her chip lipped out on the par-5 18 on day one.

It was the first individual title for the Ladies since the 2012 season when Justine Kemp won the TaylorMade Adidas Intercollegiate in Dataw Island, South Carolina. Jessica Marquart won the Centenary Invitational in a playoff Feb. 24, 2008.

Freshman Erin Rostro shook off an 89 (+17) on day one to finish with the eighth-best round of the second day with a 79 (+7). She finished the tournament with a 168 (+24) and finished tied for 21st. Sophomore Taylor Adair managed a two-day total of 171 (+ 27) to finish tied for 29th. Freshman Erin Bastien improved by five strokes for her second round to finish tied for 51st (+51). Junior Toni Collaro rounds out the field by finishing tied for 55th (209, +65).

Centenary closes out fall 2016 competition at the Christian Brothers University  "The Buc" Invitational in Memphis, Tennesssee, Oct. 17-18.
