SHREVEPORT, La. – The Gents and Bulldogs stats from the Mayo pitch were about as even as can be: The Bulldogs held a 9-8 edge in shots while the Maroon and White led in saves, 5-4. However, a late goal off a corner kick proved to be the difference as Centenary (4-9, 1-8 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Texas Lutheran (3-10, 3-6 SCAC) 1-0 Sunday afternoon, Oct. 9.

Both teams played near midfield in the first 11 minutes before Centenary had a golden opportunity to score in the 13th minute. Freshman Gabe Rodriguez’s shot to the left post was saved by a diving goalie, Victor Rodriguez, for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Colin Maloney lifted the rebound high as the game remained scoreless.

Rodriguez (1-2) grabbed three saves for the visitors, and had help for a team save, for a shutout in his first win of the season. Centenary senior goalie Rylan Whan (4-9) recorded five saves and now is four stops away from tying the career record of 372 by Scott Wright (1988-1991).

As even as the stats were, Texas Lutheran took a 6-3 edge in corners, finding the back of the net on the last one. In the 87th minute, Colin Nunley put a corner in the box and found the head of Guillermo Guerra, who put a ball off the defender into the net for his first goal of the season.

In the 60th minute, Centenary’s Nick Hammond put a shot on target left post, but a Bulldog defender cleared the ball to keep the game scoreless. Freshman Jamal Allums took his first two collegiate shots, both on target, to lead the Gents.

Centenary returns to action Friday afternoon, Oct. 14, when it takes on Schreiner. Kickoff in Kerville, Texas, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
