KERRVILLE, Texas – The Ladies kept their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament hopes alive with a sweep of the host Mountaineers, but the Maroon and White fell in straight sets to the Bulldogs as Centenary (7-21, 3-11 SCAC) swept Schreiner (3-23, 0-14 SCAC) 25-16, 25-21, 25-17 before falling to Texas Lutheran (12-14, 5-9 SCAC) 25-15, 25-15, 25-6 in the final day of conference play on Sunday, Oct. 23.

The Ladies only trailed in the third set en route to the 3-0 win at Schreiner. Junior Desiree Frey led Centenary with 13 kills and four errors on 27 swings for a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Hailey Lawson contributed nine kills and a team-best 17 digs.

The Ladies hit .198, holding Schreiner to .050.

Tied at two in set one, kills by sophomore Michaela Brantley and Frey around an error put Centenary up 5-2. With Centenary up 22-16 later in the set, two kills by sophomore Ashley Brown around an attack error by Schreiner gave the Ladies set one.

As hot as Centenary was at the end of the set, the Maroon and White carried it to the second set. After Brown’s third kill in four points put Lawson on serve, two Ashley Myer setting errors and three hitting errors by the Mountaineers’ Alyx Kruse gave the Ladies a 6-0 lead to begin the frame. However, Schreiner battled back and cut the deficit to one, 22-21, on a Frey attack error and two kills from Delanie Cauthen. A Brantley solo block, a freeball kill by Lawson and an attack error ended the second set.

Centenary led the final set by 9-7 before a 5-0 run gave Schreiner its first lead of the match. Alli Mills started the run with a kill, and a Myers kill amid three Centenary attack errors forced a timeout.

Cauthen led the home team with six kills, but added six errors to hit negative for the set.

Down 13-10, the Maroon and White put on their own hitting parade to retake the lead. A Frey kill put sophomore Amanda Farr on serve, and two more Frey kills, successful attacks by sophomore Shyann Pisano and Lawson, with a Schreiner attack error put Centenary up 16-13.

The seesaw set saw the Mountaineers reclaim a 17-16 lead, but the strong end of sets continued as a 9-0 run ended the match. A home team service error tied the match, and three errors and a sophomore Makenzie Shaw ace forced a Schreiner timeout. Two more aces, a Frey kill, and an attack error ended the match.

Centenary’s third SCAC victory is the most conference wins in a season in the history of the program.

The Ladies lost the nightcap in straight sets against the Bulldogs to close out SCAC play.

Centenary returns to action this upcoming weekend for its final matches of the season in its annual Halloween Tournament. The Ladies take on LeTourneau Friday night at 7 p.m., Belhaven Saturday at noon, and Rust Sunday at noon.
