SHREVEPORT, La. – Centenary Ladies softball, under the direction of second-year head coach Mark Suire, has announced the 2017 slate.

The schedule features 39 games: 20 at the Centenary softball fields and 19 contests away from Shreveport. The Maroon and White also have two different 8-game home stands.

“We tried to upgrade our schedule to better prepare for conference play and beyond,” said coach Suire. “We wanted to play better competition to push ourselves to be the best that we can be. I was happy we could schedule four games against an in-state, NCAA Division I team that our team looks forward to playing. With adding recognizable opponents like Louisiana College and Grambling State, as well as still playing LeTourneau, we have competition that is familiar to the student-athletes we are trying to recruit.

“This schedule is set up not only help us be better as a team, but also to help us in recruiting and for the future,” added Suire

The Ladies kick off the 2017 season on Friday, February 3, when they make the trip west on I-20 to play Pacific (Oregon) and UT-Tyler in Tyler, Texas. The following day, Centenary hosts LeTourneau in a doubleheader for the season home opener.

To close out February, the Maroon and White play doubleheaders with Pelican State-foes Louisiana College (February 7) and Grambling State (February 21). The Ladies make the return trip to Grambling State March 14.

After closing out the home stand with a doubleheader against Southwestern Assemblies of God on March 2, the Ladies travel to Hendrix for a three-game series against the Warriors March 11-12.

A return trip to Grambling State on March 14 closes out the non-conference slate.

Centenary opens up Southern Collegiate Athletic play when it hosts Austin College for four games March 18-19. Following a trip to San Antonio to take on Trinity for a quartet of games March 25-26, the Ladies close out the home schedule with a pair of four-game conference series. Texas Lutheran visits Shreveport March 31 and April 1, while Southwestern takes on Centenary for senior weekend April 8-9.

The Ladies close out the regular season with four-game sets against both Dallas (April 13-14) and Schreiner (April 22-23). The 2017 SCAC Tournament will be hosted by Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas, April 28-30.

In 2016, the Ladies finished 23-22. It was the first time in six seasons Ladies softball recorded double-digit wins and the first time since 2009 it finished above .500.

The 16-victory improvement from 2015 was the third-biggest win increase in NCAA Division III last season. Centenary’s .312 batting average in 2016 proved the best in school history, while the Ladies ERA dropped nearly 5 points, from 8.66 in 2015 to 3.69 in 2016.
