SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies softball teams opened up their home 2017 schedule on Saturday, dropping a doubleheader to the visiting YellowJackets as Centenary (0-4) lost the first game 7-1 before falling in the nightcap to LeTourneau (2-0), 3-2.

Game two saw Centenary fall in a 3-0 hole before climbing back to pull within one. In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, freshman Ashley Albright hit an infield single and advanced to second on an illegal pitch. Sophomore Cassie Gonzales than roped a double to score Albright.

In the fifth, freshman Madison Fremen singled, stole second, and scored on junior Anna Dunn’s single.

The Ladies could not score the tying run in the seventh despite having a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs. A lineout, a fielder’s choice bunt that went right to the catcher to tag the runner out at the plate, and a groundout to the pitcher ended the game.

Gonzales led Centenary from the plate with two hits in three at-bats with an RBI. Sophomore Nichole Aldridge (0-2) took the loss in the circle, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.

LeTourneau used a dropped fly ball and a muffed throw to score a pair of unearned runs in the third. Whitney Judd reached on a dropped fly ball to begin the inning, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Alyssa Pierce’s single. Pierce swiped second and advanced to third when the Ladies failed to touch first on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A successful bunt scored Pierce, but a double play ended the inning.

The YellowJackets score the winning run in the fourth when Shelby Barrick homered.

Courtney Matulis took the win in the circle in her first start of the season, allowing six hits and two runs in five innings of work. Winner in game one, Ashley Burdine gave up two hits in two innings of work for the save.

After Centenary pulled within 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, LeTourneau scored four in the sixth to put game one away. The lone run for the Ladies came when freshman Hallie Smith led off the fifth with a single, stole second, advanced on a groundout, and scored on junior Haley Miller’s sacrifice bunt.

In the sixth for the visitors, two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Bailey Woodard scored a pair with a double. Kaitlyn Allen then hit a ball just past the second baseman that scored a pair, but she was thrown out trying to advance to second.

Matulis led LeTourneau from the plate with three singles in four at-bats, while Burdine recorded the complete-game win on four hits and one run given up. Senior Lizzie Moran added two hits in two at-bats to lead Centenary.

Sophomore Lauren Beadle (0-1) took the loss for Centenary, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) in four innings of work.

Centenary returns to action Tuesday, February 7, when it hosts Louisiana College for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
