SHERMAN, Texas – After dropping a straight-set match to McMurry (2-0) 25-15, 25-17, 25-12, to begin the day, the Ladies rally fell short against Howard Payne (2-0) 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-13, as Centenary (0-2) dropped the first two matches of the season at the annual Austin College Classic Friday, September 1, in Sherman, Texas.

Senior Desiree Frey led the Ladies with 26 kills and 22 digs on the day, including a double-double against Howard Payne. With 781 career kills, Frey moved into fifth in the record annals for total kills. Classmate Allison Lazewski contributed 68 assists, including 45 against the Yellow Jackets.

In the second match of the day, Howard Payne led two sets to one and 14-13 in the fourth, but four-straight points put the Ladies up for good in the set. After an attack error by the Yellow Jackets tied the set, Frey wrapped a pair of kills around a junior Hailey Lawson ace.

With two aces on the first day, Lawson moves into a seventh-place tie with Krissi McFarland (1997-2000) for the most career aces with 107.

Howard Payne pulled within 17-16, but again two Frey kills around an ace – this time by sophomore Marissa Sandoval – put the Ladies up 21-16. Centenary captured the set and pushed the match to the fifth.

With the fifth set tied at nine, Centenary scored 4-of-5 to take a 13-10 lead. Frey and Lazewski put Sandoval on serve with a block, and an ace and Howard Payne error put Centenary up three. However, the Yellow Jackets ran off five straight points to steal the win. Zhartezia Bradley put the Yellow Jackets on serve with a kill, and a Macy Maniscalo kill and a Cheyanne Lavelady ace tied the match.

Two more kills from Bradley, who had six in the fifth set alone, ended the match.

Lovelady added 52 assists and Bradley 20 kills to lead the Yellow Jackets. Jordan Rogers contributed 13 kills on only two errors and 24 swings to hit .458.

In the first match of the day, Centenary could not overcome a .372-.040 hitting differential in the straight-set loss to McMurry. Frey had nine kills while Lazewski added 23 assists.

Justice McGowan paced McMurry with nine kills on 12 swings with no errors (.750).

Centenary returns to action Saturday morning, September 2, when it takes in Sul Ross State. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
