SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies polished off the Wildcats in straight sets Wednesday night, September 13, as Centenary (6-4) defeated Pelican State rival Louisiana College (0-5) 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 to record the second-best start in school history and the best record 10 matches into a season since 1990.

To finish off the night, Centenary scored 8-of-9 to complete the sweep and a third-set win by 11. After a service error put junior Shannon Orlopp on serve, a Wildcat error and a pair of aces forced a Louisiana College timeout. Both teams sided out, and three-straight aces by sophomore Kristian Loving ended the successful night in Centenary’s home opener.

Centenary finished the match with 12 aces, including four from Orlopp and three each from Loving and junior Hailey Lawson. Lawson and Louisiana College’s Jaslyn Bright both tallied a match-best 10 kills.

Centenary outhit the Wildcats .188-.070.

Louisiana College jumped out to a 6-3 early lead in the initial set, but Centenary countered with a 14-4 run to open up a seven-point lead. An attack error by the visitors put Centenary on serve, and a senior Desiree Frey ace and an assisted block by freshman Brittany Risner and junior Michaela Brantley tied the set at nine.

With a slim 11-10 lead, a side out for the Ladies and five points on Lawson’s serve grew the home team’s advantage. Besides a hitting error by Louisiana College, two kills apiece from junior Makenzie Shaw and Frey opened the lead to 17-10. Later up 23-17, a Lawson kill and a senior Allison Lazewski ace ended the first set.

Lazewski led Centenary with 16 assists, while Risner added 13.

With Centenary up 10-8 in the second, the Wildcats hung around rattling off a 7-3 run. A Sadi Jones kill put herself on serve, and an ace by Jones tied the frame and forced a Centenary timeout. An attack error put the Wildcats ahead. Both teams sided out, but a Brantley kill put Centenary back up, 13-12.

Louisiana College answered when two errors and a Bright kill pushed the visitors lead to 15-13. Later in the set, a Brantley kills and two kills from Lawson put the Ladies up 18-16 in the second frame, a lead they would not relinquish. The Wildcats pulled within 20-19, but an Orlopp kill and all of Lawson’s aces for the match built the lead to five and put Centenary on five set points.

Louisiana College took advantage of an error and a solo block from Naya Marshall to repel a pair of set points, but a service error ended the second.

Marshall ended with a match best four blocks for the Wildcats, while Paris Babino tallied a match high 19 assists.

Both teams ended the match with five blocks, a season high for Centenary.

The Ladies return to action next Monday when they travel to Grambling, Louisiana, to take on Grambling State. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
