SHREVEPORT, La. – The Gents were able to overcome a penalty kick goal allowed in the first half with the equalizer in the second, but two late scores by the Bulldogs proved to be the decider as Centenary (0-4-1, 0-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Texas Lutheran (2-3-1, 1-1 SCAC) 3-1 Friday night, September 15.

After Texas Lutheran scored on a penalty kick in the 34th minute, Centenary knotted the score in the 75th minute. On the left side of the field, sophomore Alex Long served a ball into the box to junior Nick Hammond. Hammond finished dead center in the goal for his first score of the season.

Prior to the Bulldogs score in the first half, Centenary sophomore Travis Schantz aimed a shot for the top of the goal. However, Texas Lutheran goalie Brendan Soto tipped the ball over the crossbar in the 17th minute. The Gents were outshot 19-10 in the game, including 9-3 in shots on goal.

While Texas Lutheran held a slim 8-6 advantage in shots in the first half, the Bulldogs used an 11-4 edge in the second half and scored two late goals from David Ching. The first came in the 87th minute, when Alejandro Martinez passed across the box to Ching. Ching beat the defender and shot into the bottom right corner to give the visitors the lead.

For insurance, Ching scored three minutes later. The Gents goalie came out to stop the ball, but Ching poked it away and had a wide open goal, tapping in the shot just in front of the endline. Ching ended the game with seven shots, four of which were on goal.

Centenary goalie Kaleb Behm grabbed six saves for the game.

The Gents return to action Sunday, September 17, when they take on Southwestern. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
