Ladies Fall to #3 Colorado College in Straight Sets

SHERMAN, Texas – The Ladies stayed close to the Tigers but could not break through as Centenary (7-7, 1-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to #3 Colorado College (14-0, 3-0 SCAC) 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 Sunday afternoon to wrap up the first weekend of conference play in Sherman, Texas.

In the third set tied at six, junior Hailey Lawson recorded a kill to put sophomore Marissa Sandoval on serve. Senior Desiree Frey recorded a kill, Colorado College hit an error, a Sandoval tallied the only service ace for the match to put Centenary up by four and force a Colorado College timeout. The Tigers took a 19-15 lead later in the set before a Lawson kill put Sandoval on serve again. Two Colorado College errors and a kill from freshman Brittany Risner tied the set up at 19.

However, Colorado College scored the final six points of the set to end the match.

Frey led Centenary with a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.

With Colorado College clinging to a 6-5 lead in the first set, the Tigers scored six-straight points to take control. A kill by Haley Harris put the Tigers on serve, and an error and another kill by Harris pushed the lead to 9-5. Two aces by Anna Gurolnick, a Centenary error, and a block from Harris-Marguerite Spaethling pushed the Tigers advantage to seven. Colorado College went on to win the first set and sweep the match.

Harris paced the Tigers with 12 kills. Colorado College took an advantage in net play, recording eight blocks to the Ladies one.

Centenary returns to action next weekend to end September and begin October at the first SCAC cross-divisional in Seguin, Texas. First match against the host Texas Lutheran is set for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
