SHREVEPORT, La. – After the Ladies fell to #3 Southwestern (25-4, 11-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) in three sets with the score in each 25-10, the Maroon and White finished SCAC play in a five-set thriller; however, Centenary (13-16, 4-10 SCAC) fell to Texas Lutheran (16-12, 8-6 SCAC) 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 24-26, 15-9 to conclude the second conference crossover tournament on Sunday, October 22.

Trailing 12-8, a kill from junior Michaela Brantley gave senior Allison Lazewski the serve. Two attack errors and another Brantley kill, tied the set at 12.

Brantley, who had 10 kills on 22 attempts (.455) for the match, tallied six kills on 10 swings in the first set alone.

Later in the set down 15-12, two Texas Lutheran errors and a junior Makenzie Shaw kill tied the set at 15. Later, down 17-16, two kills from senior Desiree Frey gave the Ladies their first lead since 3-2. Frey finished the match with 17 kills and 26 digs.

Centenary trailed 19-18 before kills from Frey and Orlopp, followed by a Texas Lutheran error, put the Ladies up for good. On set point up 24-23, a Frey kill ended the set.

Texas Lutheran answered right back with strong finish in the next two sets to take a 2-1 lead. In the second tied at 18, a Hannah Mikelonis kills put Jaci Chambers on serve. Chambers recorded the kill as a libero, and an attack error and a Cailey Young kill put the visitors up four. A Savannah Kruse kill and an attack error put Texas Lutheran on set point, and a solo block by Young tied the match.

Texas Lutheran used double-doubles out of its two setters, With Kionasina Nu’u with 32 assists and 23 digs, while Kelly Jurden added 25 assists and 12 digs. Makenzie Griffin and Kruse both tallied 15 kills, while Chambers dug 24 balls, added nine assists, and hit three kills.

Set three also stood tied at 18, but Texas Lutheran scored the next five points. Kruse had three kills in the run, while a solo block by Sara Haycraft and an assisted block from Haycraft and Kruse put Texas Lutheran up three. Centenary scored the next two points, but Texas Lutheran sided out to go on set point. The Ladies repelled one set point, but a Griffin kill ended the set.

In the fourth down 7-3, 12 unanswered by the Ladies put them in the lead. A service error started the service rally for Frey, and a junior Shyann Pisano and Shannon Orlopp kills, with two attack errors and an ace put Centenary in a 9-7 lead and forced a timeout. It did not deter Frey, and kills from Orlopp, Pisano, a Texas Lutheran miscue, and two aces forced another Texas Lutheran timeout. Pisano punctuated the run with a kill.

Later in the set tied at 24, after the Bulldogs repelled three set points, a service error and a Brantley kill tied the match and sent it to the fifth.

Texas Lutheran hit .310 (13 kills and four errors on 29 swings) to take the fifth and claim the win.

Sophomore Marissa Sandoval paced Centenary with 25 digs.

In match one, Southwestern hit .414 (45 kills and nine errors on 87 swings). Kate Mitchell hit .750 (12-16 with no errors on attack attempts).

Frey added six kills for Centenary.

The Ladies finish out home play next weekend when they host their annual Halloween volleyball tournament. The Ladies take on Belhaven and UT Tyler on Friday, October 27, before finishing the regular season with Millsaps and LeTourneau on Saturday, October 28.
