SHREVEPORT, La. – It was a hot-hitting start for the Ladies, avenging a road loss to the Blazers as Centenary (14-17) beat Belhaven (13-16) 25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 25-19 to open the Halloween Tournament on Friday, October 27.

The Ladies fell to UT-Tyler (21-6) in straight sets in the nightcap, 28-26, 25-16, 25-14.

In the first match, senior Desiree Frey hit a double-double with 21 kills (and 4 errors on 47 swings for a .362 hitting percentage) and a match-best 24 digs, while junior Hailey Lawson added 18 kills (and three errors on 41 swings for a .366 hitting percentage) while sophomore Marissa Sandoval nearly added her first collegiate double-double with 15 digs and seven assists.

Down 10-9 in set one, the Ladies went on an 8-1 run to take the lead for good. Junior Shyann Pisano put Lawson on serve with a kill, while kills by Lawson, Frey, and junior Makenzie Shaw pushed the Centenary lead to two. After a service error, the Maroon and White sided out thanks to a Frey kill. A kill from junior Shannon Orlopp, a Sandoval ace, and a Belhaven attack error punctuated the run.

Belhaven pulled within 21-18, but an error and two aces from senior Allison Lazewski gave the Ladies six set points. After a service error, Shaw ended the set with a kill.

The Ladies had 16 kills on only two errors and 33 attempts (.424 hitting percentage) in the first set alone.

The hot hitting in the second continued, as Centenary had 28 kills and two errors on 38 attempts (.421 hitting percentage). Belhaven led 13-12 halfway through, but Centenary dominated the rest of the way with a 13-3 run. Frey tied up the match with a kill, and an error, and kills from Lawson and Frey put Centenary up two. With Centenary up 18-15, the Ladies scored seven straight to go up a pair of sets. A service error brought Frey to serve, and Lawson hit three-straight kills. Two aces and a Blazer attack error ended the set.

After Belhaven captured set three, the Ladies held on by six in the fourth for the 3-1 win and a split with the Blazers this season.

Belhaven took set three thanks to in part to five blocks. With the visitors down 7-4, a 14-1 run put the Blazers up for good. Ryan Hardin started the rally with a kill, and kill by Blakleigh Smith, a Centenary error, and a block by Smith and Hope Tourney but Belhaven up and forced a Centenary timeout. A Smythe kill and a Katy Grave Abbott ace increased the lead. Two more blocks, a pair of kills from Ryan Hardin, and a Centenary error pushed the deficit to seven and forced another Centenary timeout.

After both teams sided out, a Smythe-Kelly Aholt block and a Smythe kill pushed the deficit to double digits. Centenary pulled within 22-20, but three-straight points by Belhaven ended the set.

Abbott managed 19 digs to lead Belhaven, while Smythe (13) and Lauren Whiting (10) added double-digit aces. Smythe hit .480 for the Blazers.

In match two, Centenary lost a close first set before UT Tyler took control in the second and third. The Ladies trailed 21-18 in the first before scoring four unanswered.  Kills from junior Michaela Brantley and Shaw, followed by to Patriots errors, gave Centenary the lead. With the Ladies up 23-22, Kills from Brianne Brown and Samantha Lee put the visitors on set point. The Ladies repelled three such points, but a Kaitlyn Budiasalovich kill and a Kayla McCoy-Reighanna Guzman block gave UT Tyler the first set.

UT Tyler hit .600 in the second and .464 in the third to end the match.

Lawson led Centenary with nine kills, while Budisalovich hit .522 with 14 kills. Guzman added 46 assists and seven kills. McCoy managed five blocks for the Patriots.

Centenary celebrates senior day Saturday, October 28, when it takes on Millsaps at 1 p.m. and LeTourneau at 5 p.m.
