Gents In Third At Gulf Coast Classic

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss.—Freshmen golfers Kyle McCotter and Bryan Elliott shot 74 in their first collegiate rounds of golf to lead the Centenary Gents to third place after the first round of the Gulf Coast Collegiate Classic Monday at The Bridges Golf Resort.

McCotter (Shreveport, La.) and Elliott (Haughton, La.) finished the first round in a tie for tenth place in the individual standings. They are four strokes behind tournament leader Stephen Fritsch of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

As a team, the Gents shot 300 (12-over-par), eight strokes behind team leader Tennessee State and only one stroke behind second-place Tennessee-Chattanooga. Centenary will need another solid round on Tuesday to keep its position, as six teams are within six shots of the Gents.

Junior John Kizer (Brighton, Mich.) also placed in the top twenty after the first day, finishing in a tie for 17th with a 75. Brett Kaufman is tied for 26th with a score of 77, while Brian Grone shot a 79 to finish the first round in a tie for 38th place.

Centenary will play the second and final round of the tournament on Tuesday, September 16.
