McCALLA, Ala— The Centenary men's golf team kept the momentum from its second-place finish at last week's tournament, as three Gent golfers finished at par or better to lead Centenary to a tie for third place after the first round of the Buffalo Rock Southern Showdown at Bent Brook Golf Club.

Junior Brian Grone (Mesa, Ariz.), who needed to go through intrasquad qualifying just to play in this tournament, shot 33 on the back nine to post a score of 71 (1-under-par) and finish in a tie for fifth in the individual standings. Grone is only two shots behind leader J.C. Fernandes of Troy State.

Bryan Elliott, the freshman from Haughton, La., who led the Gents last week, continued his solid play with an even-par 72. Junior Brett Kaufman (Dubuque, Iowa) also shot a 72 as both golfers finished the first day in a tie for 13th place.

John Kizer played consistently, shooting 37 on each side of the course to finish at two-over-par 74 and in a tie for 38th place, while Kyle McCotter shot a 77 to finish the first round in a tie for 62nd place.

The Gents shot a season-best 289 as a team, tied with host school Birmingham Southern for third place. Centenary is only three strokes behind leading team Troy State and one stroke behind second-place Tennessee Tech. Once again, the Gents will have to shoot another low round to keep its position, as four schools are within three shots of Centenary.

Due to rain in the area, the first day was reduced from 36 holes to 18 holes. The teams will play 18 holes on Tuesday, beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
