Valpo Defeats Gents in Mid-Con Match-up
Sunday, October 5, 2003

Valparaiso, Ind.—The Centenary Gents soccer team could not build on Thursday's win over Drury as they dropped a Mid-Con contest to Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon, 3-2.

Owen Hoyt put Valpo (1-7-2, 1-1 Mid-Con) on the board first just 14:50 into the contest after hammering home a pass from Chris Goss from five yards out. The Crusaders added to their lead less than four minutes into the second half when Jon Brighton scored off a give-and-go play from Sean Marshall.

Centenary (1-9-1, 0-2-1 Mid-Con) narrowed the margin at the 54:44 mark as Jason Williams took a feed from Alexander Smith and beat keeper Jeff Oleck for the goal.

The game would remain at a 2-1 score for 20 minutes until Adam Newell capitalized on a cross from Mickey Miller II to drive home the game-winner.

The Gents would add a late goal in the 87th minute on a header from Joseph Sidaros and an assist by Garret Pickard, but it would not be enough to overcome the Crusaders.

Centenary will receive a break as the Gents won't return to action until next Wednesday when they host Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. in another Mid-Continent Conference match.
