Volleyball Team Loses Weekend Matches to UMKC and Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. - The Centenary volleyball team improved as the weekend went along, but it could not prevent UMKC and Western Illinois from completing three-game sweeps this past weekend in conference action.

UMKC, in defeating the Ladies 30-19, 30-23, and 30-23, took control of the Friday night match from the start, hitting at a .225 percentage in game one while holding the Ladies to a .000 hitting percentage. Centenary showed some improvement as the match went on, but only managed a .035 hitting percentage for the match. The Kangaroos held a 44-30 advantage in kills, a 10-4 lead in service aces, and a 12-7 advantage in team blocks.

Against the Kangaroos, Kelley Heckman earned her sixth double-double of the season, leading the Ladies with ten kills and 11 digs. Kim Gladu earned seven kills and six digs, while Gretchen Conlin contributed six kills and five blocks. Stephanie Scanlan added 25 assists and seven digs to Centenary's cause.

Western Illinois swept the Ladies on Saturday night, 30-14, 30-21, and 30-24, but the match was much closer than the final score indicated. Each team had three total blocks, and Centenary had only one fewer dig than the Westerwinds. Western Illinois earned 12 service aces and took advantage of six ball-handling errors and 19 attack errors by Centenary to gain the victory.

Tracee Byrd performed well all around the court, earning eight kills, two service aces, seven digs, and two blocks. Scanlan contributed seven kills, 22 assists, and five digs, while Gladu added six kills, three service aces, and seven digs. Heckman led the team defensively with 13 digs.

Centenary (5-17, 0-5 Mid-Con) returns to the Gold Dome on Friday, October 17 to face Chicago State at 7 p.m.
