ELMHURST, Ill.Andrew Wisniewski was named to the men’s basketball preseason first team and Alexis Pettway was voted onto the women’s basketball preseason second team as the Mid-Continent Conference released the preseason polls and all-conference teams today.

The Centenary Gents, coming off their second consecutive 14-win season, were picked to finish sixth in the conference, according to a vote of conference coaches, sports information directors, and selected media members. In a similar vote, the Ladies were picked to finish ninth in the women’s basketball preseason poll.

Wisniewski is coming off a season in which he was named the Independent Player of the Year, averaging 22 points per game, good enough to finish 17th in Division I in scoring. He is one of seven seniors that will lead Kevin Johnson’s squad into its first season in the Mid-Con.

Centenary will be chasing the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, who earned 26 of a possible 33 first-place votes to lead the poll. Defending regular season champion Valparaiso finished second in the poll, receiving six first-place votes, while 2003 tournament champion IUPUI received the other first-place vote and finished third in the poll.

Oakland has three players on the preseason all-conference first team, including Mike Helms, the nation’s top returning scorer and the preseason selection as Player of the Year. IUPUI was the only other team with multiple players earning honors, as Odell Bradley was voted onto the first team and Matt Crenshaw earned placement on the second team.

Pettway enters her senior season as Centenary’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Last season she averaged 14.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and was named first team All-Independent. She is one of three seniors leading the Ladies into Mid-Continent Conference play.

Western Illinois, the regular season champion in 2002-03, received 17 first-place votes and was picked to win the conference title this season. The Westerwinds placed sophomore center Zane Teilane and senior forward Tiffany Cornelius, the preseason pick as Player of the Year, on the preseason first team. Valparaiso, the champion of the 2003 Mid-Con tournament, finished second in the poll and received eight first-place votes.

The Gents will begin conference play on Saturday, December 27, against Chicago State at the Gold Dome at 7:05 p.m. One week later, on January 3, 2004, as the first game of the doubleheader at the CenturyTel Center, the Ladies will host the Cougars at 4:30 p.m.
