Saturday, October 25, 2003

Shreveport—The Centenary Gents earned their first shutout of the season as they easily disposed of Belhaven College, 2-0, Saturday night at Mayo Field. The Gents attempted a season-high 23 shots in the contest as they dominated the action offensively.

Centenary (2-12-1) battled the Blazers in the first half of play but neither team could manage a goal. The Gents came out aggressive in the second half as they outshot Belhaven 23-7 for the match with 15 of those shots coming in the final period.

Alex Smith proved to be the spark for the Centenary offense as he was involved in both scores for the Gents. Smith netted the game-winner in the 52nd minute when he blasted a pass by keeper Matt Paschal that originated from Justin Clark and was redirected by Jason Williams. The goal was the fifth on the year for the freshman.

Less then ten minutes later, Smith took control of a ball outside the right edge of the box and sent a cross in front of the goal. Jeff Krulin won the pass and found the net with a header over the Belhaven keeper.

Belhaven (6-9) received an outstanding effort from Paschal who finished the match with 11 saves. Centenary net-minder Stefan Nicola earned four saves en route to his first shutout of the 2003 campaign.

The Gents return to action on Friday when they host Drury in their final home contest of the season at 7 p.m.
