Ladies Clinch Spot in Mid-Con Tourney With 3-1 Win
Friday, October 31, 2003

Indianapolis, Ind.—The Centenary Ladies became the first Centenary team to clinch a spot in a postseason Mid-Continent Conference tournament since the school began play in the league this fall with a 3-1 victory over IUPUI. The Ladies will be the first team to participate in a conference tournament since the 1999 Gents baseball team accomplished the feat in Centenary’s last year in the Trans America Athletic Conference (now the Atlantic Sun). The Ladies and Gents competed as an independent the previous four years before joining the Mid-Con.

Centenary (10-7-1, 3-2 Mid-Con) entered Friday’s game at IUPUI needing one win with two matches remaining to qualify for the postseason tournament. The determined Ladies did not wait long to start the scoring as junior Mindi Levinski lofted a shot over the Jaguars’ keeper from 18 yards out just 4:49 into the match.

The Ladies kept the momentum going in the 31st minute when Levinski struck again for her seventh goal of the season from 20 yards out on an assist from freshman Rebecca Swilley.

IUPUI (2-13-2, 0-5-1 Mid-Con) cut the deficit in half in the 47th minute as Sarah Leonard beat Centenary keeper Lindsey Stafford to the right side of the net. The Jaguars were unable to score again in the match as the Ladies defense tightened.

Junior Sara Thompson added an insurance goal at the 55:29 mark for her second goal on the year. Levinski collected her team-leading tenth assist on the play to claim second in the Centenary record books for most assists in a single season. The midfielder needs just two more dishes to move into a tie for first place.

Centenary will round out its regular season schedule with one last conference match on Sunday at Valparaiso. The Ladies have clinched the #3 spot in the Mid-Con Tournament and will play #2 Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., next Friday. Oakland will serve as the #1 seed in the tournament as the #4 seed is still to be determined.
