Northwestern State Pulls Away From Ladies

SHREVEPORT – After a close first game, the Northwestern State Demons took advantage of Centenary mistakes to cruise through games two and three and sweep the Ladies, 30-24, 30-19, and 30-13, Tuesday night at the Gold Dome.

The first game was tightly contested, as neither team could gain an advantage without the other one coming back. The Demons eventually took control, winning eight of the last nine points to win the game.

That seemed to give Northwestern State confidence, as it pulled away midway through the second game, turning a 14-13 deficit into a 30-19 victory. Game three was controlled by the Demons, as they took an 11-3 lead and never looked back, taking advantage of 14 attack errors by the Ladies in that game.

Shannon Puder led the Demons with 11 kills and a .556 hitting percentage. She also notched four blocks, the same as setter Flavia Belo, who ran a smooth offense with 39 assists. Becky David led the defense with 19 digs, all coming in the first two games, while libero Cathy Herring added 16 digs and Beth Freeland contributed five blocks.

For the Ladies, Tracee Byrd led the offense with eight kills, while Kelley Heckman and Ashley Templer each contributed seven kills. Heckman led the defense with 16 digs, with Kim Gladu adding 15 digs and Casey Varnado contributing 14 digs. Lauren Sledge notched a double-double with 13 assists and ten digs.

Centenary will return to conference play on Friday when it hosts Western Illinois at the Gold Dome beginning at 7 p.m. That is followed by the final home match of the season against UMKC on Saturday, also at 7 p.m.
