Western Illinois Sweeps Ladies Volleyball

SHREVEPORT – Junior Jenna Yurs earned 12 kills, a .450 hitting percentage, and five total blocks for Western Illinois as the Westerwinds swept the Centenary Ladies, 30-27, 30-24, and 30-16, Friday night at the Gold Dome.

The first two games were close affairs, as Centenary matched Western Illinois point for point. With the score tied at 26 in the first game, the Westerwinds scored four of the next five points to win the game. The Ladies took a five-point lead in the second game at 15-10, but the Westerwinds went on a 7-1 run after a timeout and then finished the game with a 6-0 run to go into the intermission up two games to zero.

Western Illinois took control of game three right away, starting the game by winning 13 of the first 15 points. The Westerwinds connected on 16 kills and made only three attack errors as they easily finished off the game and match.

Patty Melinauskas and Ashley Baker each earned eight kills and three blocks for Western Illinois (6-20, 5-7 Mid-Con), while Kali Landis added seven kills, two service aces, 11 digs, and three blocks. Lisa Suellentrop (21 assists) and Lisa Esmond (16 assists) split the setting duties, while libero Jennifer Alexander also contributed 11 digs.

For Centenary (5-25, 0-11 Mid-Con), Ashley Templer led the offense with 13 kills, while Tracee Byrd and Kim Gladu had eight kills each. Kelley Heckman led the defense with 13 kills, while Casey Varnado contributed 11 digs. Stephanie Scanlan notched a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs.

The Ladies will play their final home match of the season Saturday night as the UMKC Kangaroos come to Shreveport. The match will begin shortly after 7 p.m., as Varnado will be honored in Senior Night ceremonies before the match.
