Gents Open Season Saturday Night Against Belhaven
Friday, November 21, 2003

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary Gents begin their 80th season of intercollegiate basketball Saturday evening by facing the Belhaven Blazers at the Gold Dome beginning at 7:05 p.m.

The Gents, coming off back-to-back 14-win seasons, will be competing in the Mid-Continent Conference this season, a change from the past four years when Centenary competed as an independent. If the Gents win the Mid-Con Conference Tournament in March, they will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Seven seniors, including preseason First Team Mid-Con selection Andrew Wisniewski, lead an experienced squad into the 2003-2004 season. In fact, the Gents return 94 percent of their scoring and 82 percent of their rebounding from last season.

In the preseason conference poll of coaches, sports information directors, and media members, Centenary was picked sixth in the conference. Oakland, the overwhelming favorite to win the conference, has already played three games, defeating San Diego and Illinois-Chicago before losing to host school Xavier in the Dell BCA Classic.

Belhaven, a NAIA school from Jackson, Miss., will be playing its fifth game of the season and its second in as many nights. The Blazers are 1-2 entering Friday night’s game at Millsaps College. Junior center Chris Smith leads the Blazers with 12 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. This will be the first meeting ever between Centenary and Belhaven.

The game will be broadcast on KYLA 106.7 FM in Shreveport/Bossier and on the Internet at The pregame show will begin at 6:50 p.m.
