Centenary Gymnasts Open Season With Win

Denton, TX—The Centenary gymnastics team opened its 2004 season with a win on the road over rival Texas Woman’s University over the weekend. The Ladies handily defeated the Pioneers 190.500 to 185.650 to begin the season with a win for the first time since 2001.

The Ladies struggled on the vault in the early going, but provided a good showing on the bars led by freshman Kristina Menne’s 9.600 effort. Centenary then pulled away, posting a 48.025 on the floor exercise and a 48.175 on the beam.

2002 All-American Kalea Meinert recorded team-high scores of 9.775 on the beam and 9.750 on the floor to pace Centenary. Sophomore Tara Mitchell sat out the 2003 season due to injury but looked good in her first 2004 outing as she garnered a 9.750 on the beam. Menne easily took the all-around competition with a score of 38.175.

The Ladies will travel to Southern Utah to take on the Thunderbirds on Friday at 8 p.m. CST. Centenary will open the home portion of its schedule when the Ladies host Winona State in the Gold Dome on Friday, January 23rd at 7 p.m.
