Saturday, January 17, 2004

Shreveport—In a game that featured nine ties and seven lead changes in the first half, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies outlasted the Centenary Ladies in Mid-Con action on Saturday to take the 68-53 victory.

Centenary (3-12/1-3 Mid-Con) could not gain ground after losing the lead for good with 2:14 remaining in the first half in large part to a 29.1 percent shooting effort. The Ladies were just 3-of-16 from behind the three-point arc and were outrebounded by the Golden Grizzlies 45-35 for the game. The Ladies dropped their third consecutive Mid-Con match-up and their third straight contest overall with the loss.

Oakland (10-6/3-2) shot just 38.6 percent from the field, but made up for their poor shooting with a 23-of-28 performance from the free throw line. Mid-Con leading scorer Jayme Wilson was held below her average with 13 points, but sophomore Anne Hafeli picked up the slack as she poured in 26 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field. Amanda Botcha earned a double-double for the Golden Grizzlies with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Petra Manakova added ten points in only 17 minutes.

Centenary’s Alexis Pettway turned in an outstanding individual performance as she recorded her fifth double-double of the season, and the 16th of her career, with 26 points and ten boards. Pettway was 7-of-9 from the field and 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the game. Julie Danieles was the only other Centenary player to score in double figures as she finished with 14 points.

The Ladies return to Mid-Con play with the first game of a three-game conference road trip at Oral Roberts. Centenary will also play at Valparaiso and Western Illinois before returning home to host IUPUI on February 2nd.
