Monday, February 9, 2004

Shreveport—Western Illinois dominated the glass as the Westerwinds outrebounded Centenary 51-23 and sailed to a 74-52 victory in the Gold Dome on Monday evening. With the win, Western extended its win streak to six games and moved into a tie for first place in the Mid-Continent Conference standings as a result of a UMKC loss to Oakland.

Western Illinois (15-7, 9-2 Mid-Con) pulled down more offensive boards (29) than Centenary managed in the entire game. Sophomore Zane Teilane recorded a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Orinta Kavaliauskaite led all scorers with 20 points. Preseason Mid-Con Player of the Year, Tiffany Cornelius, added 12 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Centenary (3-18, 1-9 Mid-Con) took care of the ball in the first half as the Ladies committed only eight turnovers, but shot a meager 30.8 percent from the field. The Ladies improved their shooting in the final half (42.1 percent) but could not put both parts of their game together as they committed 15 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.

The deficit stood at 16 points to begin the second half before Western Illinois began the period on a 10-0 run to extend its advantage to 26 points. Alexis Pettway became more aggressive offensively for the Ladies and ended the run with six consecutive points of her own. However, the size of the Westerwinds proved to be too much as they attempted 19 more shots than the Ladies as a result of their ability to get to the boards.

Pettway and Lindsay Way led all Centenary scorers with 12 points while the Ladies’ second leading scorer on the season, Julie Danieles, was held to only one shot attempt and turned the ball over eight times.

Centenary will look to end its nine-game conference losing streak when it hosts Southern Utah in the Gold Dome on Saturday as the first part of a doubleheader with the Gents. Tip time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
