Shreveport—The Centenary Ladies ended their nine-game Mid-Con losing skid by dropping Southern Utah in the Gold Dome on Saturday, 75-62. Four Centenary players scored in double figures and, for the first time since the program began playing at the Divison I level in 1999, two players notched double-doubles in the same game.

Centenary (4-18, 2-9 Mid-Con) led 33-30 at the half after five ties and seven lead changes in the opening period. Although the Ladies weren’t ahead in field goal percentage, the team was dominating the boards. Carly Melvin pulled down nine rebounds by the intermission and Louise Smyth nailed two three-pointers to put Centenary on top.

Southern Utah (15-7, 6-5 Mid-Con) never led after the 1:39 mark in the first half but did pull within one point at 50-49 with 10:48 remaining in the second half. The Ladies answered the Thunderbird threat with eight straight points capped by Smyth’s fourth and final trifecta of the game. Smyth finished with 15 points on 5-of-5 from the field, including 4-of-4 from three-point land.

The Thunderbirds made one final run but missed six consecutive free throws to put themselves out of contention. The Ladies made good on eight of their final ten free throw attempts with less than two minutes to play to seal the victory.

Centenary shot 56.2 percent from the three-point arc paced by Smyth’s long-range precision off the bench. The Ladies were 9-of-16 from downtown in the contest as Julie Danieles nailed three big three-pointers and Tori Alloway and Lindsay Way also added a field goal from behind the line.

The Ladies received double-doubles from Melvin and Danieles in the victory. Melvin grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with her 12 points while the 5’6” Danieles hauled in 12 boards and added a game-high 19 points. Alexis Pettway contributed 15 points and seven rebounds to go with Smyth’s 15-point effort.

Southern Utah was led by Casey Cooke’s 13 points though she struggled from the field, shooting just 4-of-17. Katy Cooke added 12 points and Shauntel Garrett pitched in ten points in the loss.

Centenary will travel to Oakland to face the Golden Grizzlies on Monday at 7 p.m. local time.
