Centenary Baseball Opens Season With Blowout Win

Prairie View, Tex.—Newcomer Jesse Newell hit for the cycle and Kevin Cassidy hurled seven innings to lead Centenary past Prairie View A&M, 14-3, in the Gents 2004 season opener. Centenary collected 14 hits on the day as four players recorded multiple hits and multiple RBI's.

Newell, a senior transfer from Southeastern Louisiana, began the game 0-for-2 before singling in the fifth inning, doubling in the sixth, homering in the seventh, and legging out a triple in the eighth inning to accomplish the feat. He also finished with two runs and two RBI.

Cassidy struck out four batters and allowed only four hits to earn his first win of the season. Blake Adkison went 2-for-4 with two RBI, A.J. Howes collected two hits in five trips to the plate and freshman Jared Vincent finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in his collegiate debut.

The Gents will attempt to play at least one more game on Sunday, weather permitting, before returning to Shreveport for their season-opener on Wednesday against Texas-Arlington.
