Tuesday, February 17, 2004

Elmhurst, Ill.—Centenary second baseman Jesse Newell was honored with the Mid-Continent Conference’s first Hitter of the Week award for the 2004 baseball season. The selection is the first for the Gents in their inaugural year as a member of the Mid-Con.

Newell, a native of Everson, Wash., got off to a hot start in the season-opening series at Prairie View A&M. The senior transfer hit for the cycle in game one when he singled in the fifth inning, doubled in the sixth, homered in the seventh, and tripled in the eighth inning of a 14-3 triumph for the Gents. He also went 2-for-3 in the last game of the series, an 8-3 win. For the week, Newell hit .545 (6-11) while driving in six runs and scoring three times.

Newell and the rest of the Centenary team will host Texas-Arlington on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the 2004 home opener. The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. but was pushed back as the result of rain on Monday. U.S. Congressman Jim McCrary will throw out the first pitch.
