PHILADELPHIA, Miss. – In a tournament shortened to one round due to rain, John Kizer shot a 73 to lead the Centenary men’s golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Pizza Hut/Bell South Classic at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club.

Kizer, the defending champion of the tournament, finished in fourth place, two strokes behind individual winner Jeff Moulder of IUPUI. Kyle McCotter also placed in the top 15, finishing in a tie for ninth place with a 76.

As a team, the Gents shot 306 (+18), only four strokes behind tournament champion and fellow Mid-Con school IUPUI. Centenary did finish with a much better score than conference rivals UMKC and Chicago State.

After the first round was played on Sunday, Kizer and his teammates were primed to make a similar advance up the leaderboard that happened in last year’s tournament. However, rain wiped out Monday’s round, not giving anybody a chance to improve their scores.

David Viviano shot a 77 to finish in a tie for 16th place, while Brett Kaufman and Bryan Elliott finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 78 and Brian Grone tied for 27th place with a 79.

The Gents return to action next weekend, playing in the McNeese Collegiate Classic in Lake Charles from February 29 to March 2.
