Gents Rough Up Wiley, Sweep Doubleheader
Friday, March 12, 2004

Shreveport—The Centenary baseball team collected 23 hits and 32 runs in only ten innings of play as the Gents pounded Wiley College 20-2 and 12-0 in doubleheader action Friday at Shehee Stadium. Both games were shortened to five innings due to a previously agreed upon ten-run rule limit.

Centenary (7-9) played perfect defense on the afternoon and a bevy of pitchers kept the Wildcats at bay while striking out 13 in the twinbill. The Gent bats set the tone early as they erupted in the second inning of game one to post 13 runs in the frame. The home team cruised to easy victories the rest of the way.

Several individuals enjoyed success at the plate for Centenary in the triumph. Senior Tony Cardone finished 4-for-5 on the day with three runs and five RBI while freshman Jonathan Ahearn collected six RBI, going 2-for-3 with a grand slam, the first long ball of his collegiate career. Senior Jesse Newell also compiled six RBI with his 2-for-4 effort and junior Jacob Willett went 2-for-3 with five runs scored.

The Gents will next face the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and again on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
