Norman, Okla. - The Centenary softball team started the OU/Worth Invitational on a positive note, sweeping the McNeese State Cowgirls in a doubleheader on Friday, 8-4 and 4-1.

In the first game, Centenary scored in the top of the first inning when Micah Rhodes hit a two-run home run to center field. The Ladies scored two more runs in the fourth inning when Ursula Maroski hit a single that scored Lory Kowaleski and Sherilyn Bossier.

After McNeese State (11-19) cut the lead in half in the sixth inning, Centenary broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. After the Ladies loaded the bases, Lauren Brownlee cleared them with a double to give Centenary an 8-2 lead.

Cheyenne Daries (7-5) pitched 6 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits while striking out four Cowgirls. Janis Kelley came on in relief in the seventh inning, getting a strikeout to end the game.

The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Brownlee stepped up with the bases loaded and hit a single to drive in the first run of the game. Traci Smith followed with an RBI single, and a throwing error by McNeese State brought in two more runs.

Cathy Byrne (2-5) pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up only five hits and an unearned run. As in the first game, Kelley relieved the starter in the seventh inning, picking up the last two outs to earn her second save of the season.

The Ladies (11-11) continue tournament action Saturday morning with a doubleheader against the New Mexico Lobos beginning at 10 a.m. at the Oklahoma Softball Complex.
