Huntsville, Tex. — After a slow start on Sunday, the Centenary men's golf team posted a solid final round 290 (+2) on Monday to finish in 11th place at the Sam Houston Classic at Raven's Nest Golf Club.

Due to the weather on Sunday, the teams were only able to finish one round instead of two as scheduled. Centenary shot 311 in the first round, but took advantage of the change in the format to shoot nine strokes lower in the second round Monday morning and 12 strokes lower than that Monday afternoon.

The Gents finished with a score of 903 (+39), ahead of Louisiana Tech, Iowa, Boston College, Texas-Pan American, and Army. Oklahoma City shot a final round 279 (-9) to run away with the tournament title, 21 strokes ahead of Texas State-San Marcos.

Individually, John Kizer led the Gents for the fourth time this season, shooting an even-par 72 in the final round to finish in a tie for 19th place with 221 (+5). David Viviano shot 71-73 on the final day to move up 21 spots to a tie for 26th place with 223 (+7).

After struggling the first two rounds, Brian Grone shot Centenary's best round of the tournament, as a final round 70 (-2) moved him to a tie for 35th place with 225 (+9). Brett Kaufman tied for 68th place with 234 (+18), Bryan Elliott placed in 76th place with 236 (+20), and Ryan Oliver shot 242 (+26) to finish in a tie for 86th place.

The Gents now have a couple of weeks to prepare to host the Hal Sutton Collegiate Classic at StoneBridge Golf Club on April 4-6. That will be Centenary's last tournament before the Mid-Continent Conference Championships in mid-April.
