Tennis Teams Earn Victories Over Prairie View
Saturday, March 20, 2004

Shreveport—After a four-hour delay due to scheduling conflicts, the Centenary Ladies tennis team defeated the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers, 6-1, and the Gents took a forfeit victory over the Panthers as a result of the scheduling issues.

In a match scheduled for 1 p.m., the Ladies and Lady Panthers finally took the court at 5:30 p.m. to play the doubles point. Centenary swept the three doubles sets to win the first point of the match.

Centenary’s domination continued in the singles matches. Anja Schmidt broke her two-match losing streak with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Marika Dawkins in number-one singles. At number-two singles, Heather Kelley defeated Michele Scurry, 7-6, 6-1.

Christine Majchrowicz won in the number-three singles position, 6-2, 6-2, while Brandy Smith took the victory at number-four singles, 6-2, 6-0. Elizabeth Pitts won her match at number-five singles, 6-0 and 6-1. Ashlee Mantooth came back from a set down to force a super-tiebreaker, but could not sustain the momentum in losing at the number-six singles position, 6-1, 3-6, 10-4.

Because some of the Gents had other commitments later in the day, Centenary asked for and received a forfeit victory due to Prairie View A&M not being ready to start on time.

Both the Ladies and Gents are back in action Sunday afternoon against Grambling State. The Ladies will play at the Centenary Tennis Courts, while the Gents will compete at Southern Hills. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
