Gents Victorious in Day One of Mid-Con Cluster
Friday, April 2, 2004

Shreveport — The Centenary Gents tennis team started the Mid-Con season on the right foot, defeating the Chicago State Cougars, 6-1, Friday morning at the Centenary Tennis Courts.

The Cougars only brought five players on the trip, meaning that the Gents received a free point at the number-six singles position. Also, Centenary would have to win only one of the two remaining doubles sets to clinch the doubles point.

Arthur Okura and Russ Patrick took care of business, winning their doubles set 8-3 to clinch the doubles point for Centenary. While the doubles matches were going on, Andrew Barkley defeated Chicago State basketball player turned tennis player Craig Franklin, 6-0 and 6-0, to bring the Gents within one point of victory.

Patrick made short work of Rajneesh Ali, 6-0 and 6-0, to give the Gents their first conference victory of the season. The top three matches were close affairs, with two of them going to a third-set super-tiebreaker. Josh Pinto defeated Danai Samurino at number-one singles, 6-3 and 7-6 (2).

Brian Roberts could not finish off his comeback, losing to Amit Wadhwani at number-two singles, 6-2, 1-6, and 14-12. At number-three singles, Okura came from a set down to defeat Dejan Auramovic, 4-6, 6-2, and 10-4.

In other action, IUPUI defeated UMKC, 5-2, Friday morning at Southern Hill Tennis Club, and Oral Roberts defeated Valparaiso, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Centenary Tennis Courts.

Centenary continues action in the conference cluster with two matches on Saturday, both at the Centenary Tennis Courts. At 9 a.m., the Gents face IUPUI, followed by a match with Oral Roberts at 5 p.m.
