Sunday, April 4, 2004

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Thanks to solid performances from the entire team, the Centenary Ladies tennis team finished its first Mid-Con cluster 3-2 and kept itself in contention for a berth in the Mid-Con Women’s Tennis Tournament.

The Ladies (8-14, 3-2 Mid-Con) started the weekend hitting on all cylinders, sweeping Western Illinois and UMKC on Friday. The team of Anja Schmidt, Heather Kelley, Christine Majchrowicz, Brandy Smith, Elizabeth Pitts, and Ashlee Mantooth dominated the competition, as the closest doubles set finished 8-3 and only one of the 12 singles matches needed to go three sets.

On Saturday, Centenary ran into defending conference champion IUPUI, losing to the Jaguars 6-1. Schmidt continued her winning streak, defeating IUPUI top player Brookley Crews in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).

The top four players for the Ladies (Schmidt, Majchrowicz, Kelley, and Smith) bounced back on Sunday morning with convincing victories over Oral Roberts in both doubles and singles. Sunday afternoon, the Ladies took the doubles point from Southern Utah, but could not close the deal as the Thunderbirds, who went 4-0 during the cluster, came back to win five of the six singles matches.

Schmidt defeated Cristina Garcia of Southern Utah, 6-0, 6-1, to finish the weekend 8-0, 5-0 at the number-one singles position and 3-0 at the number-one doubles position with Kelley. The number-two doubles combination of Majchrowicz and Smith finished 4-1 during the weekend, with both players going 3-2 in singles.

Centenary travels to Chicago, Ill., next weekend for another conference cluster. The Ladies will face Oakland, Chicago State, and Valparaiso during the weekend.
