ELMHURST, Ill. — With a perfect weekend that helped the Centenary Ladies to a 3-2 record in the first Mid-Con tennis cluster, sophomore Anja Schmidt has been named Mid-Con Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Schmidt finished the weekend 8-0 in completed singles and doubles matches. She teamed with Heather Kelley to win at number-one doubles against Western Illinois (8-1), Oral Roberts (8-3), and Southern Utah (8-2).

The native of Germany won all five singles matches during the weekend in straight sets, losing only 16 of the 76 games she played. After dropping two matches a few weeks ago, Schmidt has now won nine matches in a row at the number-one singles position to improve her spring singles record to 19-2.

This is the fourth time this spring that Schmidt has earned the weekly honor from the Mid-Con, the most of any female tennis player in the conference this year. Centenary has earned the honor six times with Kelley and Brandy Smith each receiving the honor once during the spring.

The Ladies head to Chicago to finish conference play next weekend in a cluster hosted by Chicago State. Centenary (8-14, 3-2 Mid-Con) will face the host Cougars as well as Oakland and Valparaiso with the hope of finishing in the top four in the conference standings and qualifying for the Mid-Con Tennis Championships later this month.
