Ladies Shut Out IUPUI, Sweep Doubleheader
Friday, April 9, 2004

SHREVEPORT – The pitching of Cheyenne Daries and the hitting of Micah Rhodes proved to be a formidable combination as the Centenary Ladies swept the IUPUI Jaguars, 3-0 and 1-0, Friday afternoon at the Centenary Softball Complex.

Daries (14-10) pitched 13 of the 14 innings in the doubleheader, giving up only eight hits and one walk while striking out seven Jaguars. In the fifth inning of the second game, IUPUI had runners on second and third with one out, but Daries induced two pop flies to end the threat and save the sweep.

At the plate, Rhodes led all players by going 5-for-6 with a double, a stolen base, and a run batted in. Her RBI came in the first inning of the second game, as she drove in Katie Harwick with the only run of the game.

The big inning for the Ladies in the first game came in the fifth, as Centenary finally figured out the off-speed pitches of IUPUI starter Angelica Espinosa (5-6). After Lory Kowaleski hustled for a double, pinch hitter Megan Hall drove in pinch runner Harwick with another double. A third consecutive double by Jordan Lansdale scored Lindsey Virdell, and Lansdale scored as Lauren Koehn induced a rundown by attempting to steal second base.

Second game starter Devan Craig (6-7) of IUPUI pitched a solid six innings, giving up only five hits and the first-inning run. Despite two hits by Susan Jones in game two, the Jaguars (11-16, 4-6 Mid-Con) were unable to push any runs across throughout the day.

Centenary (23-19, 6-4 Mid-Con) will host IUPUI in another doubleheader Saturday, April 10, beginning at 12 p.m.
