Sunday, April 18, 2004

Elmhurst, Ill. —Thanks to a 5-3 conference record, the Centenary Ladies tennis team clinched the fourth and final spot for the Mid-Con Women's Tennis Tournament, to be held in Indianapolis, Ind., on April 22-23.

The Ladies did not participate in this past weekend's conference cluster hosted by Southern Utah. However, their spot in the tournament was secured when Chicago State lost to IUPUI, Valparaiso, and Southern Utah during the weekend.

Centenary (10-15, 5-3 Mid-Con) is led by Anja Schmidt, a five-time Mid-Con Player of the Week who brings a 22-2 spring singles record into the tournament. Schmidt won all eight of her conference singles matches, plus she teamed with Heather Kelley to win all five completed doubles sets.

Kelley, also a past Mid-Con Player of the Week, went 4-4 in singles competition in the Mid-Con. Senior Brandy Smith, another Mid-Con Player of the Week earlier this season, earned a winning singles record in conference play, going 5-3 at number-four singles, while freshman Christine Majchrowicz posted a solid 4-4 singles record and teamed with Smith to go 5-2 in doubles.

The Ladies will face regular-season conference champion Valparaiso in the semifinals of the Mid-Con Tournament on Thursday, April 22, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Weather permitting, the match will take place at the Indianapolis Tennis Center on the campus of IUPUI. Valparaiso defeated Centenary, 5-1, on April 11 in Chicago, Ill.
