Wamsley Named Ladies Basketball Head Coach
Wednesday, April 21, 2004

Shreveport—Centenary athletic director Taylor Moore has announced that Elizabeth Wamsley has been named the fourth head coach of the Centenary Ladies basketball program. Wamsley replaces David Winkler who resigned last week to help run the family business. Winkler compiled a 21-62 record in three seasons at the helm.

“Elizabeth served as an assistant in the Ladies basketball program for the last season and we are extremely happy to be able to promote Liz to the position of head coach,” said Moore. “In the brief time she has been at Centenary, I have been most impressed by her work ethic and willingness to take on all tasks with great enthusiasm. Although she has not previously been a head coach at the college level, she has an extensive network of contacts that should enable her to recruit, schedule, and promote our program at Centenary.”

Wamsley joined the staff of the Centenary women’s basketball team prior to the start of the 2003-04 season after serving as a head coach in the Alcorn Central Schools system in Mississippi. In addition to playing four years at Mississippi State where she competed in three postseason tournaments (WNIT in 1998, NCAA in 1999 and 2000), Wamsley served as the head coach of several AAU championship teams in her home state.

“I have been blessed to be given the opportunity to take the reigns of a program of which, in my opinion, holds such tremendous potential,” said Wamsley. “I have inherited a wonderful group of young ladies who are truly devoted to doing whatever it takes to turn our program into one that will bring yet another sense of pride to Centenary College.”

Wamsley also added, “The Centenary athletic administration has been a tremendous advocate for our program, and I had no doubt that they would do what they felt was in the best interest of the team when filling our coaching vacancy. I must say that I am very flattered that they have placed enough faith and trust in me to appoint me to this position.”

Wamsley will immediately begin recruiting for the 2004-05 season and will initiate a search to fill out her coaching staff.
