ELMHURST, Ill. – With a 23-2 singles record, a perfect conference season, and victories over the top players from two SEC schools, Anja Schmidt has been named the Mid-Continent Conference’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Year by a vote of the conference coaches.

Schmidt, a native of Germany, started the spring season with straight-set victories over Anastasia Kugakolova of Mississippi State and Jessica Ferguson of LSU, the 58th-ranked player in the country. Schmidt won her first ten singles matches of the spring before dropping two matches at a tournament hosted by Southern Mississippi.

Also named First Team All-Conference, the sophomore saved her best for her first season in the Mid-Con, winning all eight regular-season matches in straight sets, losing a total of just 18 games in those wins. In doubles action, she teamed with Heather Kelley to post a 13-6 record at number-one doubles, including a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play.

Schmidt, presently the 116th-ranked player in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), helped the Centenary Ladies earn a fourth-place finish in the conference, good enough for a spot in last week’s Mid-Con Women’s Tennis Tournament. Even though the team lost to regular-season champion Valparaiso, Schmidt was able to defeat fellow All-Conference First Team member Mara Sonkin in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) for the second time in a span of 11 days.

This is the sixth award for Schmidt from the conference, as she was named Mid-Con Player of the Week five times during the regular season. In its first year of competition in the conference, Centenary earned eight honors during the year in women’s tennis, with Kelley and senior Brandy Smith each being named Player of the Week once.
