Ladies One Win Away From Mid-Con Title
Friday, May 14, 2004

Macomb, Ill. Cheyenne Daries dominated the Valparaiso Crusaders, giving up only one infield hit while striking out 12 batters as the Centenary Ladies moved one step closer to a conference title with a 1-0 win Saturday at McKee Stadium.

Daries' only mistake was not having quicker reflexes, as a shot by Beth Adamski in the fifth inning hit her glove and fell to the ground for an infield single. Daries faced only one batter over the minimum, and all but one of her strikeouts came with the Crusader batter swinging at the third strike.

Centenary (35-26) scored its only run in the third inning, as Traci Smith led off with a walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out to the right side. Lauren Koehn hit a single up the middle to drive in Smith.

The lack of Crusader offense wasted a solid pitching perfomance by Ashlee Blankenbaker, who gave up only three hits and one walk in seven innings of work. She struck out six Centenary batters during the game.

Centenary advances to the championship round against the winner of the Valparaiso-Western Illinois game being played now. The Ladies' game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., and Centenary will win the Mid-Con tourney title with a victory.
