ELMHURST, Ill. – In a vote of Mid-Con baseball coaches, first baseman Blake Adkison was named First Team All-Conference, while second baseman Jesse Newell and outfielder Bobby Gilliam earned Second Team All-Conference honors.

Adkison, a senior from Tyler, Tex., is in the middle of one of the best offensive seasons in Centenary baseball history. His .397 batting average, 16 home runs, and 55 runs batted in place him second in the conference in all three categories. He racked up 21 multi-hit games, earned three multiple-homer games, and led the Mid-Con with a .771 slugging percentage and nine home runs in conference games.

Newell has made the most of his final collegiate season after transferring from Southeastern Louisiana. The senior from Everson, Wash., batted .317 with eight home runs and 47 runs batted in. In the first month of the season, he was named Mid-Con Player of the Week twice as well as Player of the Month by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA). Newell hit for the cycle in his first game as a Gent against Prairie View A&M on February 14.

A senior from Loyola College Prep in Shreveport, Gilliam continually found his way on base from the leadoff spot. He is batting .321 with 49 runs scored, 26 runs batted in, 27 walks, a .416 on-base percentage, and 23 stolen bases. Gilliam became Centenary’s career leader in at bats (737), runs scored (182), walks (136), and stolen bases (78) during the season.

These three players lead the Gents into the Mid-Con Baseball Tournament, being held today through Saturday at Shehee Stadium. Centenary, the third seed in the tournament, faces second seed Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Thursday night, following the 3:30 p.m. game between top seed Oral Roberts and fourth seed Southern Utah.
