Friday, September 3, 2004

MEMPHIS- The Centenary Gents launched their season opener on Friday night with a 0-1 loss to the University of Memphis at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Memphis scored their only goal in the first half when junior Dayton O’Brien got it past goalie James Speed in the 16th minute off a free kick. The Gents were unable to answer back before the end of the half.

Returning for the second half, Centenary had a chance to even the score but was unable to put one in the net. Memphis controlled the offense with a 25-5 shot advantage, but the defense collaboration of Dustin Forward, Aaron Elrod, Jonathan Wright, and replacement goalie Ransone Rose held the Tigers scoreless in the second half.

This is the seventh time the two teams have met with Centenary having 2-5-0 all time record against the Tigers.

The Gents (0-1) will play their second game of the tournament against Western Kentucky on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
