Centenary vs Oakland (Sep 17, 2004)

Rochester, Mich.—The Centenary Ladies soccer team remained unbeaten through its first six games by besting the defending Mid-Continent Conference Champion Oakland Golden Grizzlies 1-0 in overtime on Friday evening. The overtime match was the fourth consecutive for the Ladies who now sit atop the Mid-Con standings.

Centenary (5-0-1, 1-0 Mid-Con) received an outstanding game from keeper Lindsey Stafford. The junior recorded 11 saves in the match to keep the Ladies within striking distance despite being outshot on the day 21-11.

Both teams had numerous chances to score as the Ladies placed six of their 10 shots in regulation on goal. Oakland (2-4, 0-1 Mid-Con) targeted ten of their first 19 shots accurately only to see Stafford thwart every attempt including a header from close range by OU’s Kristi Mitchell.

Centenary, already battle-tested in overtime, wasted no time ending the contest. Less than three minutes into the extra time, Tara Sageser found Rita Coolidge and the senior laced her shot into the back of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Coolidge and the assist extended Sageser’s scoring streak to six matches. The freshman has tallied a goal or an assist in every collegiate outing of her short career.
The Ladies will stay in Michigan to take on Detroit on Sunday at 11 a.m.
